Memorial Weekend Marathon

Working out on my own has been fun, but it has been a challenge.  The challenge often times is finding the time and finding the motivation when Bobcat is home waiting. I hate the double standard and the guilt that seems to be programmed into my genders brain.  I feel guilty leaving to workout when he is home alone and maybe hungry and I don't know why.  Its not like he is helpless, its not like he cant feed himself, and its not like he wouldn't just take off and leave me behind to go workout.  But I do, I feel guilty and its something I will have to work on.
But this past week that has changed.  Bobcat has gone "training" mode on me.  He is on his salad only diet (which he wants me to join but isn't going to happen) and he finally got back on bike.  I think the trip to the mountains for the Tour of California got his fitness goal going.  I can't say it didn't have an effect on me, watching pro racers  go up and down the mountains is inspiring, but watching the amateurs and the weekend warriors is soul stirring.  While I sat in my screened tent eating my morning poptart bundled in my hoodie, I watched hundreds of average cyclists try their hand at part or all of the days route.  And while I wanted to make excuses as to the fact that these people were Cat 2 riders, or semi pros (many were), the fact remained that for every one of those riders, I saw one that looked like me.  In a few very gut wrenching cases, I saw some that were way worse than me.  Slowly pedaling, determined to get to the top, earning the nods of the elite riders as they passed them and words of encouragement from those on their way back down.  I wanted to be that person on the bike, and I think Bobcat did too.
The bike season in Casa de Voltron (we aren't married so I shall name our household however I choose) started on Tuesday with a trip to the El Dorado critierium races.  It was a nice 7 mile round trip on our mountain bikes.  However, the real riding got started this weekend.  Its been a daily 10k on the trainers together.  I don't know if all the sessions will be together, but for now its at least a comfort to know I am not alone anymore.

1000yd swim

Food:
PB&J sandwich

Triathlon Training...Round 2?

Its  been two weeks since my triathlon, and it was finally time to get back to the gym.  My next triathlon should be sometime in June, I just have to pick which one.  My first week back I was super sick, and this past week was a failure of work/life balance.  But I aim to fix the work/life thing next week.  I plan on carpooling with Bobcat again so I should be home at a normal hour, and unless I have to, the laptop is staying at work.  Crossfit will start up again next week 2-3 times, and for sure the pool and running get 3 days.  Cycling will have to get fit in every day maybe I will have to learn to do a morning ride on the trainer at 4am....or maybe not.  This blog will also be updated almost daily as well with either a full post or a quick shot of my food and workout.  I have a date with an Olympic triathlon this fall and I need all the prep I can get!

Workout:
Swimming 750 yards-30min
100 push ups (kneeling)
100 sit ups
10 jump squats
15 min bike

Food:
fried Tofu w/ veggies and fried rice
large boba thai tea
7 egg rolls
1 vanilla protein shake w/OJ
1 dinner roll
5 oreos

30

30 has come and gone.  To say I was disappointed in my year's journey to get here is an understatement.  I did not achieve the fitness goals I had set out for, and even more frustrating is that the culprit behind the stall is still here.  I sat around for months sick and surly and in a pity party of one.  I was pretty sure it couldn't get any worse until it did and then I suddenly didn't have time to worry about me because my family needed me.  Sadly sometimes it takes something much worse for you to realize that life sometimes sucks... but so what.!  Other times it kicks ass, and sometimes its sad, sometimes its just flat but at least your still living.  And if you don't bother to fight for every moment than whats the point.  One good thing about sitting around at 30 is it affords you the opportunity to figure out what you want out of life sometimes it isn't the same thing you thought you wanted when the journey started.  All the things that the world told me were important and required to be "successful" are not the things I want people to talk about when I am gone.  They aren't the stories I want to tell my nieces and nephews, they aren't the memories I want flashing by in my final moments.  I don't want to look back at all the things I didn't do or waited to do.  No I want to be like the Most Interesting Man in the World and live vicariously through myself!

SO...I hit up the doctor for a new plan and then I signed up for a triathlon and posted it to Facebook.  After all once its on Facebook you can't back out.  Training while I was sick was interesting but I figured if being sick was my new normal so be it-- time to adjust. Happily, during my training, my health took an upswing  and so far its still leveling off! Looks like the new plan, though painful, has paid off. In fact I was so happy and inspired that I also decided to take care of the rest of my life.  It was time to get rid of my debt and it was time to get happy at work.  Sadly getting rid of my debt has been the easier of the two.  However, telling myself that work stops once i hit the 405 has really helped a lot.  My job will not define me.  My transformation is 5 months late but I dont care.  Its here, its happening, and after a lot of delay and setbacks I can finally say:
I AM A TRIATHLETE!!!

Paleo and Pain

Ok the title is misleading, the paleo did not cause the pain....not all of it anyway but it did prohibit me from easing it in my normal fashion---beer and tailgate foods.  The majority of the pain came from watching the Texas-OU game, but that's a long sad story we don't have time for here.

The first day of the challenge was off to a sputter.  As the challenge was a little last minute decision, I had already planned a mini tailgate for the game today.  So breakfast was of the McDonalds variety, but I did cut out the hash brown, most of the pancakes, and half the Englisher muffin.  And I did limit myself to 1 beer to ease the sting.  Lunch/dinner and my snacks the rest of the day went really well though.  In fact, I was given a super surprise at lunch--Cauliflower Rice.  OK, I know it sounds gross and weird but it was really really good, and It really tasted a lot like rice.  Texture was close, and the taste was almost the same.  It even passed the Bobcat test...and I don't think he likes cauliflower.

No Crossfit today, but took the dog on a 2 mile walk.  My flair up is pretty much gone now, a slight red mark is still on my foot and the ankle is just slightly stiff.

Bet you wouldnt have known that wasnt rice if I hadnt told you

So it Begins!! Paleo Challenge 2011

To say that my recovery from all the shit that has happened to me this year has been on track would be a total and utter lie.  My recovery has been slow and almost non existent.  And it feels like every step I take forward I get shoved back another 3.  I have had 2 flair ups of whatever it is they think I have, one at a funeral that I did not want to draw attention to myself at, and another this week as I was getting into the groove at crossfit.  I was at least able to catch this one in time and get some long but slow walks as exercise and keep the swelling down.  So after debating on it for a few weeks, this flair up was the last straw, and I decided to jump in and do the paleo challenge at the gym.  The next 7 weeks are about me and trying to recover and find a light at the end of this tunnel.

My goal is at least 20lbs down.  I have no idea how many inches to aim for, but 2 dress sizes would be nice.  I just bought some "goal clothes" from the Macy's Karl Lagerfeld collection so it be nice to rock them this winter.  I'd also like to rock some pleather pants.  I'd also like to finally do an effing pull up. If going paleo also helps with the illness I'll take that too because I hate it.  I am not sure if Bobcat is on board, if he isnt well then he can make his own dinners or add on to what I make.  There are 2 weekends I know for sure wont be paleo but I will do my best to make it up in work outs.  One is Oklahoma weekend, and the other is Thanksgiving.  I could add a few more, because lets face it, when you are unsatisfied at work ever weekend is special, but I won't.  I won't cheat myself like that.  I need these 7 weeks to get me a starting point.  If all goes well and I can sustain, I will keep going and hope that I can be beautiful for my 30th birthday in Vegas.  I need a better birthday than I had last year, maybe I wont wind up crying at the casino bar playing video black jack this time.

So here is to Sunday!  I raise this final lemon bar and Mountain Dew to the challenge and to myself.  May we fit in old clothes and new, and find the strength and courage to seek out and accept all the new challenges ahead.

Quick Hit

Stayed focused today.  Avoided the temptation to make a giant slice of cake my lunch and picked up a seaweed salad and half a california roll.  I can feel I just lost some of you with the seaweed thing.  Trust me its delicious, no I'm not on drugs.  Again, its one of those things you just have to try and its so worth it.  Nutrient dense and chock full of iron, its an easy and tasty way to get in some vitamins and greens.  I also made my 8 glasses of water today and had to pee every 10 minutes :(  For dinner it was a quesadilla since it was entirely too hot to bake the chicken today, and bobcat was not feeling dinner.  It was also too hot inside to get on the trainer, so had a makeshift workout in the yard after finding my old 10lb dumbbells.  The workout was made harder by Mr. Dog, who kept attacking me trying to get to the dumbbells.  Tomorrow will be bad, its a pizza lunch at work and well...i love me some pizza....A LOT.

Food...NOM NOM NOM!!!!

If it wasn't evident upon meeting me, let me put it out there....I LOVE FOOD!
I love all kinds of food.  In fact the more food I discover, the more food I love.  There are foods out there just waiting for me to love them, and trust me I fully intend to.  One of the biggest regrets I have in life is that my culinary education did not begin until I was almost 20.  As a kid I grew up in a town dominated by Mexican and standard fast food.  At home we had, you guessed it, Mexican food and standard American fare.  Vegetables were pretty much corn and green beans.  Proteins were beef, chicken, pork, eggs and beans.  Fish was...well if we had it it was tuna or fish sticks.    Don't get me wrong.  Its not like I grew up with total crap food.  I had awesome food.  The thought of my Grandma's mole' makes me homesick, and memories of my Grandpa's meatloaf bring tears to my eyes.  It was excellent food....it was just pretty much the same.  I didn't discover new food until I left for college.  There I met all sorts of new people and with them all sorts of new food.  At first I was hesitant, but after diving in there was no turning back.  First came broccoli, then came thai, and sushi, and pho, and then all the wonderful new meats.  Now, I love going out to eat with people.  I love when they take me to places I've never been and introduce me to foods I've never had and in turn, cultures and traditions and new ideas to take home.  Mixing foods and trying to recreate them is just as much fun as eating them.  And its this idea that I hope will help me embrace my 80% paleo goal.  I worry that I will get stuck eating just meat and salad over and over, so I am excited to try to make substitutions.  I hope to have a paleo version of ramen, and pad thai, and find fun new ways to spice the meats.  So I will try to post pictures of all my culinary experiments, and adventures that make the paleo cut!  On a side note, -4lbs in the first week of going 80% paleo, and that was with no workouts because I was sick, so hopefully a bigger number with crossfit and biking this week!

Monday Funday!

Woke up with a stuffy nose and heavy head so decided to sleep in, so 5:30am crossfit did not happen.  However, the extra sleep and food prep the night before made for a pretty good Monday.  Last night I decided to get this 80% paleo plan in full swing.  So I made a bacon, mushroom frittata, prepped a bacon, tomato, avocado salad, and set some rosemary chicken for dinner.  So come this morning it was a simple grab a slice of frittata for breakfast with coffee, grab the salad for lunch, and pick up a piece of fruit for snack.  To make things better Bobcat stayed home, so a phone call home led to the rosemary chicken and veggies being ready when I got off the 405.  Food Prep is so worth it.  I really need to learn to do that meals for a month deal, but then I'd need a bigger freezer.

I finally made it to crossfit after a lot of thought and procrastination at 8:30pm and still had a little hope that I'd be held up and too late to get to class.  I dont know why I play this game.  Once I start working out I always feel better, but its just so hard sometimes to just jump right in to it.  Why is that?  Do I have a self destruct button inside?  Are there workout gremlins in my house or something?  Well anyway, crossfit started well.  Laughing, a good warm up and the workout looked ok enough.  But then we got down to it and it was anything but ok about 4 minutes in.  I was only doing beginner ring pull ups and beginner handstand pushups and really after 5 minutes its all I would have been able to do.  At minute 8 I failed to do the required number of HSPU so it was just pullups for the next 4 minutes.  I did manage to get to the full 12 minutes.  So that came out to 78 pull ups, and 34 handstand push ups.  When I was done it looked like I had stepped out of the shower, and I felt like I had just run a marathon.  All and all I felt pretty terrible and pretty great at the same time.  Lets see if I can get my arms up to comb my hair tomorrow.

WOD:
With a continuously running clock, do one pull-up and one handstand push-up the first minute, two pull-ups and two handstand push-ups the second minute, three pull-ups and three handstand push-ups the third minute... continuing as long as you are able. When you cannot complete the required number of reps for either exercise, continue only with the other as long as you are able.

1/4 slice bacon, mushroom frittata
coffee
Lunch:
Bacon, avocado, egg, tomato salad

5:30am...WHAAA???

In my attempt to get in 5 days of workout I decided to try Monday, Wednesday, and Friday Crossfit and bike in between.  Then when radio class is over maybe add in Saturday CrossFit.  However, what I have planned and what work decides have been two entirely different things.  So Tuesday and Wednesday were not happening and I started to feel a little discouraged.  Then I had a moment of crazy and thought, "I can go to CrossFit at 5:30am and then still get to softball tonight and still stay on track for 5 days."  If you know me, there is only 2 things I have ever really done at 5:30am and they are SLEEP, or crawl home from a great night out.  Work out has not ever been on the 5:30 list or the before work list.  But figuring that I am now almost a responsible adult (haha) morning workout sounded like a legit idea.  So I laid out my gear, laid out work clothes and set my alarm.

There was no need to wait for the alarm as Mr.Dog was ready to be let out about 4:45am and let me know it by a cold sniffer to my face.  Since I was up and Bobcat was up I decided to get go ahead and get ready.  My declaration that I was heading to CrossFit was met with the raised eyebrow and crazy look.  I got to the gym and started having second thoughts but figured since I was there (and since I had already posted my check in to FaceBook) I might as get it done.  Coach Carlos, who I had never worked out with, was a really great guy and very alert and chipper for 5:30.  I guess he is a morning person.  I cannot say the same for all my classmates.  Probably the most tame class I have ever been to.  Not bad, but just different.  The workout was good, avoided the heat, and still got to work at about the same time.

The real magic happened when I got to work.  Lately I have has issues getting to work.  I usually wake up giving death stares to the clock, have to give myself a pep talk in the car on my commute, then take some deep breaths before getting out of my car in the parking lot.  My first sign of a headache or need for a Tums is usually about an hour after arriving.  Work has been stressful to say the least.  But not Thursday.  I had been concerned I would be sleepy after the work out, but I wasnt.  I was very alert and almost hyper.  I sang along to the radio on my way in, saved an earthworm in the parking lot, picked up a real breakfast at the cafeteria, and was just generally happy.  So happy in fact, I annoyed/concerned two of my coworkers.  Then I worried I would crash and burn later on in the day.   I got a bit run down around 11, but some lunch fixed it right up and again I was running around the halls like a squirrel in Spring.  Overall, Thursday went really well.  I wasnt even tired at softball.

So lesson learned--there might be something to this morning workout.  My adrenaline was up, my endorphins were flowing, and I felt accomplished before the day even started.  And I was done.  It was one less item to worry about during the day which was nice.   So nice, I think I might try it again next week.  The classmates will hopefully come around and not be too freaked out when I turn into the loud aggro afternoon crossfitter during some of the longer workouts.

2011 Sucks....so far

2011 has not been the year of the Chunke Munky.  No sir, it has not been a good year at all.  But starting today I am going to try to get a grip on the little bit of this situation I can control.  After all, when life hands you lemons you go find some tequila!

My illness has acted up some, so my feet turned hobbit like and I was dead tired for 2 weeks.  To make it worse I was back home at the time for a sad event and was determined not to make an issue of it.  In the aftermath of it all I gained a million pounds and my knee feels like crap.  And to make it worse Uncle Karl is releasing a collection for Macy's and I am pretty sure I wont fit into it.  So what does this all have in common---me.  I can't control the flare up and I can't control death but I can control me.  So what I need to do is get myself together and get some discipline.

I have 5 weeks to get ready for Fight Gone Bad.  In these 5 weeks I need to do a 1 hour workout 5 days out of the week, if possible do 2 a days with the bike.  I also need to get to 80% paleo, or at least clean up my diet.  I did a weigh in today, not proud of the numbers and after that I was too afraid to ask for measurements at CrossFit...maybe I will try Wednesday if my courage is up.  So in 5 weeks I hope to not only see a change in the scales, but in the clothes and the fitness.  If not, its going to be a long and sad 17 minutes at Fight Gone Bad.

100 Miles of Nowhere...Munkys and Bobcats on Bikes edition

This post is actually very long overdue.  Id like to say its late due to an epic bike trip, or preparation for some big adventure or even alien abduction.  The sad fact is, I was simply to lazy to upload my photos to my MacBook.  My Mac is getting on in years, and its small HD means I have to go find a portable drive to connect in order to upload large files.  So yeah, its a pain and I get lazy when it comes to downloading stuff.  Anyway, on with the show!

About 3 months ago I was reading the Fat Cyclists blog, and the announcement for the 4th annual 100 Miles of Nowhere (100 MON) was posted.  Being a lover of all things Fatty, and being that I am still afraid to go on a real long bike ride ( or any outdoor ride) with Bobcat I figured this would be a fun way to ride and still be with him.  My weakness actually riding the bike would be minimized by my ability to sit on my ass and watch TV or listen to my ipod for an extended amount of time in one location.  See the 100 MON is a ride you do on trainers, or very small loops, meaning he couldn't leave me in the dust or give me the "hurry up and catch up" look.  It also meant I wouldn't have to pee in some ditch or gas station.  So I signed us both up waited a few weeks an finally our kits arrived.
Then about a week after the kits arrived, we prepped the bikes, set the TV to some Premier League Soccer for the day, set my ipod to my techno dance party and got a good nights sleep.  When I awoke the next day Bobcat had affixed our super awesome race plates to the bike and put some nice iced water bottles in the cages and set up our snacks.  Then we were off on our magical trip.  The original plan was 50 miles each and I set out with the plan of low resistance hoping to do about 20-25mph.  Bobcat decided right away to skip the resistance and just see how far he could go in the time it took me to do my 50 (always the 1-Uper).

So an hour in even with resistance I was 34 miles in and only about 8 miles behind Bobcat, but 25 miles in I had realized I could not keep this pace on my knee.  So at the one hour mark I removed the resistance and it was game on, we were going for the full 100.  Unfortunately my adjustment might have been a bit late as I was pretty tired for the next hour and despite getting off to stretch and convince my lady-bits and ass that I did not hate them they would have none of it.  In these moments Bobcat, already used to sitting on his ass through years of cycling and even more years of working at a desk, took the opportunity to surge ahead.  At a little past the 2 hour mark he announced that he had completed his 100 MON.  It was also at that time he became my official snack and water bitch.

So feeling like Lance, all alone and going for the kill, I rocked the headphones and started pumping the techno...since the game was over and suddenly Bobcat put on Bridezillas which was doing nothing to pump me up.  My ass was screaming at me, my calves were not happy, my arms and wrists were starting to rebel, and my water bitch turned out to be horrible at his job.  Then just before the 3 hour mark, the clouds parted, rainbows streamed through the house, and my cyclocomputer read 100 miles.
If I had had the strength I would have looked up for my photo, it might have also helped if sweat and snot wasn't running down my face.

Overall I would say 100 miles and 3 hours later I was not only happy to be done, but happy that I had started as well.  There were moments I sat on the bike wondering WTF I was doing and there were moments where I wondered if I would ever feel my lady-bits again.  All in all though it was a fun experience and I hope to have a go at it again next year.  And after reviewing the photo finish, despite what the cyclocomputers said, I clearly was the winner and ahead by  half a wheel!

Those aren't tears, its sweat... I swear

Finally!!!  Today was the return to Crossfit!  I was ordered to do beginner level and limit myself to 2-3 times per week for now.  They could have said baby duck level and 1x a week and I would have been happy, I just really wanted to go back.

If you have never been to Crossfit, you might not understand the complex relationship one has with it.  In fact, most people would probably say I was crazy (and not just because Ms.Salles took my scissors away in 8th grade).  If you had walked into the gym today and seen Chad sitting alone in the lotus position barefoot and smiling while blasting punk, you might have been inclined to just turn around and go home (I thought about it for a minute no lie).  But for the rest of us, thats just Chad and thats just crossfit.  This insane workout, with crazy people you call family, and by crazy I mean dedicated and driven.  You either are or you aren't are crossfitter.  There is no real middle ground...you love it or you hate it.  Even when it kicks you in the face and leaves you with ripped hands, breathless on the floor, you are smiling and laughing inside (sometimes it seeps to the outside) and you cant wait to get back up to see if you can do just one more.

I love crossfit, and I love my gym and all the people in it.  I even love Gina who made me use the hard foam roller today and the lacrosse balls during mobility (I will admit that it was for my own good and there is no way I couldn't love Gina).  My only regret today was that I could not make the 5:30 class to have the chance to work out with my old classmates.  But I think the small class at 8:30 was probably the best situation for me right now.  It just feels so great to finally be back, even though I don't know for how long.

Attack of Tuesday

Work and dog class ate up my evening, so I am going to use today as my rest day.  I am going to pack my swim gear in the hopes that I can get to the pool at lunch, but I am not holding my breath.  Work seems to know when I want to swim because it suddenly blows up and vomits all over my desk.  One day I will fool it!  But if I dont make the swim I will just extend my bike to 45 min on the trainer, half interval half steady pace.  Tried the new Asian Grilled Chicken Salad from McDonalds and was pretty impressed.  Its not as awesome as Wendy's, but since Wendy's gave us all the finger and discontinued their salad it will have to do.  I am sure soon McDonald's will pull the salad too and I will be screwed again :(

Let's get to it!

So I managed to do a 10 mile bike ride last night on my mountain bike outside.  I took the neighborhood and park route and was let int he dust by a 10 year old on a fixie.  It took an hour and it felt so much harder after having played on my road bike for the past year.  But it was a fun ride, and a solo ride that gave me time to think and prepare for my solo challenge.  As I rode I debated the photos and I dont think I will post my pictures just yet.  Maybe I wont post them until after its all over and I can see the difference. Today was a 30 minute ride on the trainers and boy was it painful.  After the air and sun yesterday, the stale house air, and TV just didnt cut it.  The only positive from the ride was the fact that my bike odometer hit 300.  Well tomorrow will be another fun day on the trainer since we have dog school, last class finally.  Then at least next week we an start the trips to the park for the races.  I still dont have a good way to log my food, so for now here it is in guess-timate form.  Im not positive on on the calories so i just chose to over estimate from what i could find online.

The End of the Pity Party (?)

The past two months or so have been a real whirlwind of events and emotions.  My setback has cost me my first Tri, my CrossFit comeback, and running.  Its also cost me any progress I had made and a lot of stress.  I can say that even though I have been unable to really work out, I have been constantly exhausted with all the mental ups and downs.  Going from scared to angry to scared really takes a toll on the body and not in a good way.  But I have had enough, and now that I have a mini green light to get back to it I am going to attack it before anything else happens.

I was unable to sign up for the CrossFit Long Beach Leaning Challenge, and I was excited that Bobcat was going to do a mini challenge with me at home, but now that seems to be a bust.  So now its just a me challenge I guess.  Just me, a bike, a pool(?), and a better diet.  I am not clear to do any impact sports yet :(  So I took my day 1 pictures today  and they are sad to look at and I am very hopeful that day 30 will be a lot better.  I have been debating if i should post my pics and stats here, and I think I might have to sleep on it.  Even semi anonymous, the girl in me refuses to want to post those damn numbers.  I do plan on putting my daily food log on here once I figure out how I want to format it for this site.

Also, on a sad note...I have lost my running buddy before we had a chance to really gel.  Mr. Dog has been diagnosed with bad hips and is not a good candidate for corrective surgery.  until we can find another option there is no running, jumping, dog beach, and pretty much anything he normally likes to do.  I don't know who is more devastated by this news, Mr. Dog or Me.  Man, it has really not been a good couple months at the Chunky Munke household, June better bring some new beginnings.

Injury and set back

So I don't know what is wrong with my foot..now feet and knee.
I have been to 2 doctors with a follow coming up for each.  Some of the swelling is down thanks to doc #2, but I have been ordered to avoid workouts.  So this crazy Lent idea I had to go stone cold Paleo is a little bit of a blessing now as that's the only thing that is going to get me fit at the moment.  I was hoping that swimming would be ok but the doc said nothing.  I now wish I had those weird breathing videos my dorm-mate would do when she ordered me out of the room.  And of course this whole weekend has been beautiful and biketastic :(  At least Mr. Dog got a work out since we were dog sitting for a friend this weekend.

I think its safe to say unless there is a dramatic break through in this medical mystery that Warrior Dash on April 2 is out of the picture.  And I will be lucky to get through my first try on May 8th with the 3 weeks this is going to set me back.  I really hope on Friday he says its ok for me to do something even if its just upper body stuff while sitting on a chair.  I guess really that should be secondary right now to me being able to put a shoe on for work on Monday.

Mr. Dog

So a week or so ago I decided to get brave and try to run with Mr.Dog.

Running with Mr. Dog has been a challenge in the past.  In fact, I believe Mr. Dog is trying to kill me sometimes.  I picked up Mr.Dog from the pound in October, and I had every intention of having him pace me during runs.  He is a very energetic dog and I had no doubt that he would help me get faster and be excellent company on a run.  However, Mr.Dog has had other ideas of what a run is.  In fact, he didn't want to run the first time, he wanted to sprint from point to point and linger for 5 minutes sniffing a tree.  We ended up doing some strange sprint/walk/drag dance for a block before it dawned on me that a run was not in the cards.  The second time we tried to run, Mr. Dog lulled me into a false sense of security before going in for the kill.  We started with a nice half mile walk warm up, then we started alternating between a run walk for another half mile, before moving into a good run.  Things felt great and I thought we had finally made it and soon we would be as gracefully as the runners at the park.  Then about 2 blocks from the park Mr. Dog had a bout of ADD and was distracted by a squirrel.  As he ran across me to start the chase he spun me around and I ended up tripping on his leash.  Then instead of stopping he drug me for a few feet before I could let go of the leash.  I had a busted knee after that and had a wonderful limp home.  We passed many people running, biking, and even rollerblading with their dogs and I couldn't help but feel that would never be us.  So the decision to run with Mr. Dog took a lot of thought and a lot of mental prep.  As I asked Bobcat to put on the harness while I put on my shoes, I got the "ARE YOU SERIOUS" look.  We started our run slow and gradually built up speed and things were looking great.  Then at the 1.5 mile mark Mr. Dog thought he saw something and started barking and leaping.  Thankfully we were at the corner by the house so we just called it a day at that point.  Maybe next run we can make it the full 2 miles, and then start working on running at the park on some grass.  Baby Steps!  One Day Mr. Dog and I will be on the same page, and we will be the graceful cool runners we get passed by all the time.

Haven't been to CrossFit or a done a real workout in a week.  I did something to my back and was hoping some rest and Vegas would fix it.  However, it still hurts and I am concerned.  I got a massage and hopefully that loosens something up so that I can get through a WOD tomorrow and a light bike on the trainer.  If not I fear a visit to the Orthopedic Surgeon :(

Day 3--Why is the third day always the worst?

In my many years of real fitness, and my many recent attempts to get back to that state I have learned that its not the day after that hurts, its day 3.  You might be kind of sore on day 2, but its nothing compared to what you feel when you wake up on day 3.  By the third day you have had time to really let that sore sink in.  The muscles have had time to stiffen up really nice, and the adrenaline from the first day has had time to wear off completely.  When I was in soccer, day 3 was when most people stopped showing up during Hell Week.  But if they had just stuck around they would have known this was the worst of it for the most part.

Well today is Day 3 for me and the cramping in my calf and hips is phenomenal, and my stiff legs have me walking like Frankenstein down the hallway at work.  Just looking at my calendar this morning had me on the verge of tears when I realized I had several meetings on different floors and the only way up or down was long flights of stairs.  But I went, and I limped and grimaced.  I know people were looking, and it was ok.  In a few weeks they will realized what was going on and why it was worth it.

Today was a swim day according to my Tri Schedule, but everyone bailed on me and I was feeling quite the chunky munky and intimidated to put on my suit and go alone.  So instead I just went to go take a look and ask some questions.  The hot guy behind the desk was very nice and helpful and put me at ease, so I think I will be brave and go tomorrow even alone.  I don't feel very bad about not swimming since the CrossFit workout today was brutal.  It was so brutal about 5 minutes into the warm up I was starting to have second thoughts about being there.  But the great thing about CrossFit is that its like a family and everyone keeps you going.   Today's WOD was "EVA" and all I can say about that is Eva must be some bad ass bitch because this workout was really punishing even at beginner level.

During my run portion of the WOD I noticed a snail crossing the run path, and each time I came around he was a little farther along.  At first this was really cute, but as the workout went on the snail an I began to have conversations in my head.  I couldn't help but understand the plight of Mr.Snail.  His slow trip across this path was very much like my time doing EVA.   I am sure neither one of us thought it would ever end.  But to be fair, Mr Snail only had to cross the path and not get squished.  I had a nice set of Kettlebells and Pull Ups to do in between my runs.  Post WOD I had to lay on the floor and pray I wouldn't puke and once I was sure I wouldn't my next task was trying to stand up.  The cramping came back but some time on the evil foam roller and stick eased it.  Now its time for a good nights sleep and sweet dreams of the pool tomorrow.

Day 1...Again

So to be honest I started Day 1 almost a year ago when I joined CrossFit in March 2010.  I had thought my quest to beach abs and Ninja Warrior was just a few months away, but this thing called work had other plans.  I had to go on quite a bit of travel and lost a lot of my progress at the hotel bar and taking in the local cuisine after 16 hour days.  And just to make it more interesting I injured my knee and learned that pushing through the pain at 28 is not the same as it was when I was 16.  But I guess that really doesn't matter.  The only thing that matters is today is DAY 1.  And why is today Day 1?  Well I suppose because its the day I finally got myself together and realized that  "OMG I SIGNED UP TO DO A SPRINT TRI ON MAY 8TH AND I GET TIRED JUST THINKING OF IT"

Now, I know what you're thinking and NO... I was sober when I signed up and Yes, I have an explanation.  See, I suffer from an abundance of fit friends, a love of free beer, and prizes.  All of these things can be found at any well organized race or event.  Especially the ones with costume contests and mud.  My problems is, well, all my friends are done before me and I don't end up in any of the post race pictures or I miss out on the moments they all talk about on the car ride home.  But not this year.  This is my last year of the 20's and I plan on getting myself together before 30.

so today was Day 1 of The 29 Plan and the Tri Training.  I managed to get myself to CrossFit and when that was over I managed to get a mile out.  I have no idea what I weigh as I was too afraid to get on the scale but I know its not good.  When I feel brave maybe I'll post it, for now just know my pants are tight, and I am not looking forward to putting on my swim suit this week.
